After blowing audiences away with the astonishing Starlight Express, MIDAS return to the Lime Tree stage with a tale for all times.

Stephen Schwartz’s Godspell is an immensely successful rock opera which needs little introduction. When it was first produced on Broadway in 1971 it broke new ground in its stage treatment of the historical Bible. Based on the Gospel according to St Matthew it deals with the last days of Jesus, and includes dramatised versions of several well-known parables.

And yet it is more than telling of stories. Godspell is a questioning of existence and religion, a demonstration of joy, and a celebration of humanity. It is a jubilant and uplifting experience.

The ensemble cast were originally conceived as clowns, improvising scenery and costumes, and using many well-known theatrical devices, pantomime, vaudeville and varied musical styles to interpret one of humanity’s most famous events.

Famous for songs such as Day by Day, Prepare Ye and All for the Best, the score of Godspell is a treat, combining a range of musical styles from Gospel to Pop.

MIDAS has become acclaimed in recent years for their endless pool of youthful talent and high production values. This year will be no different and Godspell will feature a large company of students of the College, directed this year by Jenna Sulecki, with choreography by Robyn O’Brien, musical direction by Noel Lennon and with Dr Michael Finneran as producer.

Given the commitment, energy and passion that this company has become renowned for, do not miss this show. The MIDAS production is inspired by the recent Broadway revival and it will be an energetic, imaginative and passionate staging of this little performed but wonderful musical.#

You can book tickets for Godspell here or by ringing Lime Tree Theatre Box Office on 061-953400.
