Wired FM celebrates the signing of new 10 year contract

Limerick’s Student Radio Station, Wired FM, has been awarded a new 10 year licence from the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI), and will celebrate on National Community Radio Day which takes place on 23 June.  The signing of this new licence means the station will continue to broadcast on its current home at 99.9FM well into the future.

Speaking at the contract signing, which took place at the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland offices in Dublin, Chief Executive of the BAI, Michael O’Keeffe said “Wired FM plays an important role in facilitating active citizenship and in promoting access and participation by members of a community in a radio service that is representative of their interests and needs.
Community and community of interest radio services have been an integral part of the Irish media landscape for the past twenty years. Today’s contract signing marks the continued commitment of Wired FM to community radio in Ireland. I would like to wish this student station continued success over the term of its new licence.”

Speaking about the contract renewal Ray Burke, Manager of Wired FM, said: “In our application to the BAI we made a commitment to develop the station even further, to enhance programming and increase broadcast hours. We’re all really excited about the task ahead.
Wired FM would like to thank the partnership colleges Mary Immaculate College and Limerick Institute of Technology for their commitment to support the station over the next 10 years.”

National Community Radio Day takes place on 23 June and will be celebrated nationwide. Wired FM will use the occasion to celebrate the end of what has been a triumphant 21st year of broadcasting in Limerick that saw the station host a National Student Radio Conference at Belltable in November as well as several other unique events throughout the year. For National Community Radio Day Wired FM will broadcast a special schedule from 9am-9pm, which will see the station link up with Limerick City Community Radio to broadcast from Chez le Fab at Arthur’s Quay in Limerick City. There will be live music, and interviewees with community groups and organisations. The special schedule will include documentaries produced by this year’s MIC Co-Op students, as well as some other one off collaborations. The schedule will be posted on
